A parking deck serving a municipal government facility underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to restore and protect its existing surface. The project involved removing the previous urethane coating system, addressing existing substrate conditions, and installing a WestWood PMMA waterproofing system to provide long-term protection and renewed functionality.

The Challenge
The project presented several challenges, including restricted working hours and weather-related delays caused by rain. The existing urethane coating required scraping, grinding, and shotblasting to prepare the surface for the new system. Additionally, existing cracks in the parking deck needed to be addressed as part of the refurbishment before the WestWood PMMA system could be installed.
The WestWood Solution
WestWood’s PMMA system was selected to provide a durable waterproofing solution while minimizing disruption to the municipal facility. Compared to traditional urethane systems, PMMA offers a significantly faster return to service, allowing the parking deck to reopen at the end of each work shift. The system can accommodate foot traffic in approximately one hour and vehicular traffic in two to three hours, helping maintain access to the facility throughout the refurbishment.
The waterproofing system incorporated WestWood’s Wecryl 240, a non-reinforced PMMA waterproofing membrane that provides seamless protection across the deck surface. The system was finished with a Wecryl 496 BX topcoat, completing the refurbished parking deck surface.
Project Results
The completed refurbishment provided the municipal parking deck with a durable, seamless waterproofing system designed for long-term surface protection. By replacing the existing urethane coating with WestWood’s fast-curing PMMA system, the facility benefited from reduced downtime and an accelerated return to service. The system also provided seamless transitions between horizontal and vertical surfaces, including curbs, creating a continuous waterproofing application throughout the parking deck.
